basalt head

late XVIIIth Dynasty
Akhenaton reign - 1350-1333, B.C.

Princess Ankhes Pahaton, daughter of Akhenaten and Nefertiti and wife of Tutankhamen.

The extremely pure lines of the face, prominent ears are accompanied by a deliberate deformation of the skull. This style of sculpture, particular to the reign of Akhenaten still remains a mystery. This style disappears with him as well as all the work from his rule.

A sculpted joint tenon found at the base of the neck leads to believe that the head was attached to a body separately sculpted.
