Middle Empire, XII th dynasty, 1900, B.C.

Egyptian clergy played an important part in the society.
Temples were a place of purity, where the clergy were forced to observe an extremely strict physical and moral code.

Clergy were to perform their absolutions four times a day. They were completely shaved and waxed so as to remove all bodily hair. They were also circumcised, which was not always the case for secular society.
While at the temple they were to abstain from all sexual activity and not go against the religious beliefs of the gods of their city. In the interior of the temple they could only wear a piece of pure linen cloth, without wool or leather, coming from any living animal.
