FODÉ CAMARA
Exhibition Sale
Contemporary painter
first part (1/2)
With Fode Camara we tackle another new chapter of art in Africa. Born in 1958 in Medina (a working class district) Dakar, Fode is the inverse of many other artists of this continent. He comes from an urban environment and is not self-taught. Having studied at the " Ecole des Beaux Arts" in the Senegalese capital, followed by the "Ecole des Arts Decoratifs" in Paris, he has been able with great talent to juggle diverse influences without concealing his own culture, history and roots. A pure product of a continent undergoing immense changes, he represents a contemporary African art to which time will without doubt render legitimacy. If his work may seem disconcerting for those defenders of African "primitive" art , we can assure them that while the time and materials have changed, the expression remains the same; it is simply adapted to other realities. This ten year retrospective will enable you to discover history and the development of an individual as well as that of a continent. The eleven paintings displayed cannot unfortunately cover all the aspects of Fode's work. They will however be an enticing introduction. Although Fode Camara's paintings are now known on many continents, his activities are not limited to them. Perpetually in search of new materials and techniques, he has also challenged art forms as diverse as interior design, development projects or glass paintings.
