BIERI FANG

Gabon

The Fangs derive their spiritual and physical force from the tree, which represents their ancestors.

Because of their semi-nomadic way of life and their aggressive behavior, they are often seen by their neighbours as terrifying. Despite their reputation and constant mobility, the Fangs have been able to create art, that is often considered by the West as one of the most fascinating in Africa.

The guardians of the reliquaries, also called "bieri", are an important part of Fang art. Placed on the top of the reliquary, they watch over the remains of their courageous ancestors, and serve as intermediaries between the living and the spirits of the dead.

They are also symbolic evocations of the defuncts, as well as a source of magical protection for the relics.
