BAOULE MASK

Côte d'Ivoire

The Baoule are originally part of the Ashanti people. They left what is now Ghana after a quarrel, and led by their Queen, went to settle in an area in Ivory Coast. Baoule art is one of the richest in Africa. It is due to the grace and the beauty of its design, that at the turn of the century, famous European artists started to be interested in African art.

This dance mask is covered by an important crusty patina. Its chin is prolonged by a beard, which gives it a male character. The mouth, round, is surrounded by traditional scarifications. The eyes, half closed, portray the classic Baoule mask style.
