IDOMA MASK

Nigeria

Origin : Nigeria

The Idoma live at the junction of the Benue and Niger rivers, in south west Nigeria.

An agricultural people, they often live with mixtures of other people sharing their beliefs and cults.
Several secret societies have the responsibility to maintain the different cults. One of them commemorates the cult of Anjenu, the spirit of the bush living in the rivers.
They use this type of white mask , the color of death for ceremonies.

The face of the mask is coated with kaolin. The face is decorated with traditional scarifications and the teeth clerly evident. The holes around the border of the mask, used to attach the costume which hides the wearer, are practically eroded. This proves a long use of the mask.
