ALIYU MUSTAPHA
Lamido of Adamawa

Nigeria

One day, Adama who was also called Modibo, heard that a great Marabout( moslem leader ) by the name of Ousman Dan Fodio, had proclaimed the Jihad( holy war ) in Gobir and the Hausa country.

He invited representatives of all the Fulani nations, to come to Sokoto to receive his teachings and guidances, in order to organize the Jihad in their own country. Adama was chosen among the Fulani delegates of Fumbina( south ), to receive the symbol of the Jihad, the flag of Moslem power. Adama became the Lamido( king ) of Fumbina, or soverain of the south. He was given the responsability to convert the pagan populations to Islam, and to build mosques in conquered lands. Every year, Adama sent a procession of slaves and herd of ox to Ousman Dan Fodio.

At Adama's death, his immense territory became Adamawa, which actually covers a part of south-west Nigeria and all of northern Cameroun.

Today the Lamido has sixty children, and is the chancellor of Amadou Bello University at Zaria, one of the most prestigious universities in Africa.
