WOOD FIBER CLOTH AND NATURAL PIGMENTS The Yakas, are located in D.R.Congo (ex-Zaire), near the Angolan border. Although geographically distant, they are still considered as belonging to the Kongo entity. This type of mask is principally used during initiation ceremonies, and comes out in pairs. They are surmounted by figurative elements, attached to the Yaka mythology. It can be the representation of individuals, as well as fish or abstract forms. They also have the face painted in white, which is the color of death. Hidden under the vegetal fibers, a handle comes out from the chin. It enables the user of the mask to hold it on his face while he executes the ritual dances.
