WOOD, METAL, NATURAL RESIN, GLASS This Vili fetish is a "statue of power", one of the most important categories in the Bakongo sculpture. They are referred to as "nkisi", and call upon the supernatural forces. They serve for divination as well as for rituals of initiation, therapeutic, protection or vengeance. Each "nkisi" statue has a particular name, in function of its powers. Often covered with red powder, they contain magic charges made of various substances like, plants, seeds, pieces of bone, or skin. These magic charges have specific virtues: protect the owner, defend him against evil forces, chase bad spirits. This fetish, which represent a female ancestor, dates from the 30's. It has three magic charges: on the stomach, the head and the back.
