Royal masks participate actively in the exercise of power. They maintain order and apply justice. This is possible by its' ability to communicate with the beyond forces.

Masks of cult are the visible appearance of secret societies, who play a very large role in Bakongo culture. They participate in initiation ceremonies as well as circumcisions.
