CEREMONIAL HORN

Most likely from Angola or Congo, this ceremonial horn is a superb example of ivory sculpture.

It displays a series of scenes laid out in distinct sections.

The point of the instrument, is a representation of a noble sitting on the back of a small personnage. In his right hand, he holds the root, symbol of the chief. The following section is decorated with geometric shapes and a tortoise. Perhaps a symbol of a clan, or a family totem.
Followed by two females characters and a village hut. The central section of the horn is pierced by a hole in the form of a diamond. Then, comes a scene representing a man sitting smoking a pipe. A woman is next to him, surrounded by the instruments of daily life. The following section is decorated with a procession of men, carrying different instruments. They are surrounding an individual with two heads, who, seated on the ground, seems to be cutting something with a machete. The last section is composed of a succession of square forms, extended by woven straw. It probably serves as a protection for the border of the horn.

This type of ceremonial horn is not really used as a musical instrument. It is rather a symbol of the power and the rank of its owner.
