IVORY, METAL AND NATURAL RESIN Knives and swords play an important role in the Kongo ritual. They symbolize the power and pride of the chief who owns them. Ritual knives are made in pairs and a dignitary is usually responsible for their maintenance. They are used during ceremonies and participate actively, in the exercise of power. They also guarantee justice that has been rendered. The ivory handles of these knives represent a man, his hands on his chest and a woman her hands on her stomach. The ivory carries heavy traces of use. The blades were made using traditional methods. It is to be noted, that contrary to many other people in Africa, blacksmiths hold a prestigious place in the Kongo society. They are often descendants of great families and are in no way considered as belonging to inferior casts.
