PIERROT MEN
The tales of the island

first part (1/5)

Madagascar, that “great island,” that immense isle, torn from the African continent, and tossed to the tides. No longer part of Africa but not yet in Asia. Madagascar, that hybrid, mixed race world, at the junction of influences and civilizations. Madagascar, that far-away land whose every spoot is an invitation to dream: Tuléar, Nosy-Bé, Tamatave, Fort Dauphin...

It’s with very Asiatic finesse that Pierrot Men describes for us this almost African world. His photos are at the essence of the “Great Island,”: with neither violence nor passion. Just a quietude that seems encased in eternity.
For on the “great island”, life is but an adventure, an obligatory passage that must be subsumed while awaiting deliverance. True life only begins after death. In the kingdom of ancestors and their spirits. So why challenge the order of things: suffice to wait.

Pierrot was born, lives and works in Fianarantsoa, the country’s second city. At “Fianar” as they say. Of that city he knows every nook and cranny. He discovered them during his most tender childhood. Life was not easy then. To escape it, there was only the dream. It was then that he swore to become an “artist”.

Thus he invites us to dream with him. Just like his mentor, Doisneau, he offers us his universe, which so eloquently feels like “the good old days.” But that universe is very still real, in Madagascar.

Bon voyage
