AKAN SEAT
Origin: Ghana / Côte d'Ivoire

For the Akan (group to which the Ashanti belong), the seat has to symbolize the personality and power of its owner.

"There was a time when a man was judged and respected by his seat"

This citation illustrates the role and importance of the seat in the Akan society. Each individual, due to his function and the importance of his position in the group, can have a seat with a precise form.

After the owner's death, his seat can be kept by the group and serve as an ancestor figure. It is then placed in a special area, where, laid on its side, it receives offrands during ceremonies.

The base of this seat represents a lion, symbol of power and force.
