Beds are rarely found in traditional African furniture, however one does find them in West Africa, with Senoufo and Lobi societies. Their use is exclusively linked to funeral rites.
In fact, beds are only used to expose the body of the dead during the inhumation ceremonies. For the Senoufo, the decoration and the tree from where the bed is sculpted, is directly chosen according to the personality and function of the dead person. These types of death beds are usually reserved for important funerals. This Lobi death bed is made of fibrous and very heavy wood. Of monoxyle type, it is decorated with only a square head-rest.
